If you want an action-packed adventure holiday, it’s not necessary to spend a fortune on a trip to exotic climes – there is plenty on offer here in the UK. What’s more, you can really save money on these breaks by using YHA hostels; these perhaps do not enjoy the reputation they deserve and offer great-quality budget accommodation – meaning you can save money towards that next big foreign trip.
As a base for an all-round action-packed holiday in the UK, the Lake District takes some beating. At the centre of the region is Ambleside, which is quickly becoming recognised as the action-adventure heart of the region.
The town is situated at the head of Windermere, Britain’s largest lake, and thus is home to all sorts of watersports. From kayaking and canoeing to white-water rafting and sailing, there is expert tuition on hand to assist everyone from novices to pros. On top of this, the hills surrounding Ambleside not only provide stunning scenery, but challenging and enjoyable walking routes, abseiling and climbing centres, and mountain biking tracks to suit all skill types.
The YHA centre at Ambleside is comfortable and offers great value – along with plenty of advice on what the area has to offer.
For a different – yet no less exciting – activity break, try a costal trip to Perranporth in Cornwall. The area is known as a surfer’s paradise, but even if you’ve never had a go before, there are surf schools on hand to get you started in this exhilarating sport. Other sea-based activities include bodyboarding, windsurfing and power-kiting – or you can just make your own fun on the Blue Flag beaches.
This area of the Cornish coast has some stunning scenery – even the YHA Perranporth hostel sits on a cliff top overlooking the Atlantic. The area is therefore popular with walkers and ramblers, but those cliffs also provide great opportunities for climbing and abseiling by the sea – something you just can’t get in many other places.
If all that is not enough, the local Marine Life Centre is home to sea birds, seals and dolphins, and there are a number of operators providing horse-back tours of the local area.
