Top 5 Travel Considerations

"holiday-stress free"There are a lot of factors to consider when you travel. Now that it’s summer time and many people are planning their vacations we must whittle these considerations down into an actionable list. Here are 5 of the most important factors to consider prior to traveling:

Packing appropriate clothing. Just because your going to a warm weather destination doesn’t mean you don’t have to pack some warm clothes. Temperatures often drop off dramatically at night, especially in beach towns or in desert areas. Conversely, just because you’re headed to Alaska or some place traditionally associated with cold temperatures doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a pair of shorts you can wear during the day. You’ll want to make sure you are prepared for all kinds of temperatures and weather situations.

Being financially prepared. You should carry multiple forms of currency with you when you travel. This means cash, traveler’s checks, credit cards, and debit cards. This will safeguard you against a situation in which a restaurant out in the middle of nowhere only takes a certain type of payment. You don’t want to have to scrub dishes to pay off dinner, do you? You also want to be sure you have appropriate travel insurance to protect you and your family from theft, injury or another unexpected accident

Safeguarding your home. While you’re away, you want to make sure that your home will be safe and efficient. This means making sure all appliances are turned off, including heat, pilot light and air conditioning. You also may want to install a security system to protect against intruders. Some people use home automation systems that actually turn lights on at night so that it looks like somebody’s home, which can dissuade criminals from trespassing. You can also have a neighbor check in from time to time to bring in the mail and make sure the water’s not running.

Filling necessary prescriptions. Few things could be worse than stepping off the plane and realizing you didn’t bring a necessary medication. Take care of filling prescriptions well in advance of a trip and make sure they are packed in a secure bag that you will not forget.

Creating a contact list. Put together a list of people that authorities or others could contact in the event of an emergency. If you have friends in the city you’re visiting make a list of their contact information as well.

Traveling should be an exciting, invigorating activity that inspires the whole family. Summer is a wonderful time to experience new cities and landscapes, but be sure you have taken the necessary precautions to ensure safe and efficient travel.
